Feature Friday "SheRea" In the Spotlight!

Hey Everyone,

Today for Feature Friday I have fellow vlogger SheRea DelSol aka MyThriftedCloset sharing her natural hair story with us.  I am so glad she was able to take time out to share with us, so without further let’s get started.

SheRea thanks again for giving us the 411 on that fabulous hair of yours.  I want to start off by letting you introduce yourself.
Hi, my name is SheRea DelSol. I am the vlogger behind http://youtube.com/mythriftedcloset. I am from St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands.

Aww…The US Virgin Islands.  My dream vacation spot!! LOL!!  Well, let’s talk about your those tresses of yours.
How long have you been natural?
To date, I have been natural for almost 3.5 years.

Did you slowly transition back to natural or did you go full force and Big Chop?
I transitioned for five months and then I big chopped. I was tired of struggling (and yes it was a struggle) with maintaining my new growth and relaxed ends.  Also, I just wanted to play in my natural hair. I didn’t have the patience to wait. I just wanted to jump right in.

Girl….I feel you that transition struggle can be oh so real!  I did it for 9 months so I definitely understand.

So once you rid yourself of those relaxed ends,  how did you feel? After going natural, I felt awesome! I had been natural for most of my life, but I still had no idea what my hair was like. I didn’t know or understand the purpose of trimming, deep conditioning, etc. Unlike a lot of naturals, I only had a relaxer for three years of my life, but I did not even know that my hair was curly. Hey, you only know what you know, right?

Exactly!

How did family and friends react to your decision?
No one cared that I was returning to natural. Well, I wouldn’t say no one cared, but people didn’t have strong opinions about it. I never got ANY negative feedback (perhaps people knew better than to throw shade in my face, lol). I mean, people really did not say much. When I big chopped, people were amazed by my curly hair. Everyone seemed to love it. I know that is not an experience that is shared by a lot of naturals but I have been blessed in that way.

Now that you are able to see you have a curl pattern, how would you describe it?
I have fine, kinky curly, medium density, low porosity hair. My hair is curly when wet, and kinky, afro textured when dry without product.

I am sure a lot has changed for you this time around.  What’s your current hair routine?
I wash my hair whenever I have product build up, want to switch up my style, or my hair needs some TLC. Here are my steps:

1. Deep Condition/Protein Treat-Yes, I deep condition on dry hair. Here’s why: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzB3_VuLjPc. I alternate between a protein treatment and deep conditioner every time I wash my hair. I find this keeps my hair nice and supple.

2. Cowash- I usually stay away from shampoos and only really use them when I feel it is absolutely necessary or I am testing products for a company.

3. Oil Rinse-Oil rinsing has saved my natural hair life. My hair is a lot shinier and suppler. If you want to learn more about oil rinsing and how I oil rinse, you can check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgPfNRMsuQM

4. Condition-I add my conditioner directly on top of my oil, finish my shower, and then rinse!

5. Air Dry & Leave In-Because I have low porosity hair, I air dry my hair in two braids for 15 minutes-1 hour then I apply my leave in conditioner of choice to my damp hair (my hair takes FOREVER to actually dry).

6. Style-I usually only use a leave in and styler because I feel like that’s enough to keep my hair moisturized. My favorite styles are the wash n go and curly sets (perm rods, roller sets, etc.) I have tutorials on my Youtube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCF7B0L3cMXz5R9E43cUYNsw ) if you’re interested.

What are some of your favorite products?
Well, let me start off by saying that I think technique trumps products, but like other naturals, I love me some products lol!!

I also have reviews on my YT channel on almost everything I am mentioning.

Deep Conditioner- LAWDDDDDDDDDDDD I will SINGGGGG the praises of L.A.C.E. Natural Brahmi Root Hair Masque. HANDS DOWN, it is the best DC I have ever used in my life. Plus, it’s packed with ayurvedic ingredients, which I personally love. GET. YOU. SOME. I also love the Shea Moisture Anti-Breakage Masque.

Protein Treatment- Apoghee Keratin 2 Minute Reconstructor is the BOMB. Yes, it has mineral oil, but IDC, IDC, IDC. It works for me and leaves my hair stronger and softer. I use their two-step protein treatment every 6-8 weeks to strengthen and fortify my hair.
Co-wash- My favorite cleansing conditioners are VO5 Clarifying Conditioner, as well as As I Am Coconut Co-wash, and Eden Body Works Cleansing Co-wash .They all cleanse Sassy (my hair) without leaving it stripped. I don’t have a favorite shampoo because shampoos are for blah for me, but these cleansing conditioners, hunny, L.I.F.E..

Oil Rinse- My favorite oil is mustard oil. It smells funky but the slip and softness it imparts is divine. It’s a staple!

Rinse Out Conditioner- Tresemme Moisture Rich. That is all, good night. But seriously, this conditioner has amazing slip (best slip ever) and leaves my hair SOOO moisturized.

Leave In Conditioner- What ya’ll know about that jheri curl juice? S Curl “No Drip” Moisturizer is my boo. It is softening and straight up awesome. I never have to re-moisturize my hair when I use it. The moisture lasts 7+ days. The Shea Moisture Curl & Style Milk is also another favorite of mine. I love it especially in a cocktail when I am wearing wigs and weaves.

Styler- Beautiful Textures Curl Definer Mousse is the business. It makes my curly sets bouncy and shiny. It will forever be a boo of mine. For my wash n gos, I have to go with my Xtreme Wet Line gel. It gives me lasting results for 4+ days and defines every kink and curl.

Aweseome…that is some great detail for my readers.

How do you maintain your hair at night?
When I wear a wash n go, I just gather my hair into two ponytails. If you want to see how I preserve the style for SEVEN days, click here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dJjmXrUv30. I do the same thing for my curly sets. If I am rocking a twist out or braid out, I will re-twist or re-braid. Sometimes, I add product, sometimes I don’t, it just depends on how my hair feels/looks.

Thanks again SheRea for speaking with me today.  I absolutely loved the depth of information you provided and I greatly enjoyed having you.  Before I let you go, can you tell us what the best thing about being natural is?
Versatility. Oh, and all the dope women I’ve met, including yourself. I love that my hair can do so many things and that I can inspire women to rock their natural hair. I also love the community of which I am a part. I have an online family because of this crazy, rebellious, and awesome thing on my head and that is so dope to me!

Thanks again, SheRea.

Feature Friday "Chelsea" In the Spotlight!

Hey Everyone,

Today for Feature Friday I have the beautiful Chelsea sharing her natural hair story and hair regimen with us today.  This Gorgeous Girl with the Goldie Locks has been featured on almost every natural hair social media forum around and I had to have her on my blog giving us the "Tea" on how she maintains her tresses. I don't want to keep you waiting so let's get into it.

Hi Chelsea....Thanks for taking time out to share with use today.  I want to start off my asking you to tell everyone a little bit about yourself.
My name is Chelsea. I am currently a senior at Truman State University studying to receive a B.S. Health Science.  I am from St. Louis, MO. I enjoy shopping, thrifting, reading, and watching YouTube videos.

Awesome....I wish you nothing but the best with your education endeavors. I love to see young adults valuing their education and obtaining those degrees.  Ways to go!

Okay...I am dying to dive into this hair of yours. How long have you been natural? I began transitioning in August of 2010. I cut off the last of my relaxer in December 2012. So I have been fully natural for almost 2 years now and I am LOVING IT!!!! Wouldn't have changed anything.

Why did you decide to Transition?  I chose this way because I think I was too afraid to cut off all of my hair (LOL). But transitioning was not hard for me at all, I actually enjoyed it. I spent a majority of the time wearing sew-ins. I also did the traditional twist/braid outs, rod sets. I hated having the " straight ends " and then the curly roots but I dealt with it. I feel like I used sooooo many different products during transitioning its ridiculous but what worked the absolute best for me is the "Kinky Curly Knot today Leave in Conditioner". Great for those with super thick curly hair.

That is my favorite Leave in Conditioner "Hands Down"!!! Definitely good for thick hair.

How did you feel after going natural? I feel like going natural is definitely one of the best decisions I ever made. Like if I could go back in time, like I stated above, I wouldn't change a thing. I love the versatility of natural hair.  I actually feel like my hair is smiling now, free from any chemicals (other than some hair color here and there). I encourage everyone to go natural and embrace themselves naturally.

How did family and friends react to your decision to go natural?
My family and friends were both happy and hesitant at the same time. I think seeing my hair in between, my mom was like 'OMG you need to just gone and get a relaxer' . Like they would see that I sometimes it took a lot of patience to deal with my transitioning hair and they would say "That's just too much". But I just stuck with it because I knew what  I wanted for my hair. SO in response I would just keep doing what I was doing and would say something like "You'll see the outcome and you'll love it." And now they do just that , LOVE IT!

How would you describe your hair? I would say that my hair has three different curl patterns. It has a 3b, 3c, and 4a in different sections. I used to try to figure out my curl pattern but I sort of gave up lol. My hair is very thick. When it is curly it touches my shoulders because it has a great deal of shrinkage but when all straightened it reaches just below my bra line. My hair absorbs water and oils really fast so I always keep my hair moisturized. My hair is also very bouncy when in its curly state.

Can you share your current hair routine with us?
My current hair routine (a normal wash day) begins with a wash. I wash my hair once. I always do everything in sections, so I wash and condition my hair in two sections. After the wash, I apply my conditioner and rinse. I then apply conditioner again. At this point I detangle. After I detangle the two sections, I allow the conditioner to sit on my hair under a cap for 20-40 mins. Once this is done, I rinse out conditioner with cold water. I proceed to applying my leave in conditioner as well as coconut oil. Once that is done, I apply my curl mousse, and curl gel (still in sections). I finally use the diffuser to give me my final look.

What are some of your favorite products?
My favorite products include:
1.Tresemme Naturals Conditioner- it works great with detangling and in my deep conditioner
2.Kinky Curly Knot Today Leave-In Conditoner- AWESOME (if not the best) detangler and leave in conditioner for transitioners, especially those with course and thick hair
3. Coconut Oil- I apply before EVERY STYLE! keeps my hair moisturized
4. Giovanni Direct Leave-In Conditioner- excellent lightweight conditioner for anyone, a little goes a long ways

How do you maintain your hair at night?
I maintain all my hairstyles at night by sleeping with a satin cap. The only thing that changes is when I wear a bantu knot out, I always re-knot my hair at night using larger sections.

You made it seem so simple.  Ladies...just because you have a head full of hair doesn't mean you have to follow a 20 step regimen on wash day, just a few easy steps can do the trick and keep your hair thriving and growing.

I want to thank you again Chelsea for taking time out of your day.  We really appreciate your hair story and we absolutely love your pictures. I do have one more question before I let you go.

What is the best thing about being natural?
VERSATILITY  and CURLS!!! I love the fact that I can do sooo many different hairstyles on my hair. It is easy to achieve a variety of different looks whether I begin with straight hair, blow dried hair, or wet hair!

Awesome....Thanks again Chelsea!

Feature Friday "Tiffany" In The Spotlight

Hey Everyone,

Today for Feature Friday, I have blogger and natural hair model Tiffany Nichole sharing her natural hair story with us.  I am glad she had was able to take time out to talk about her natural hair journey, so without further ado, let's get started.

Hi Tiffany, Thank again for taking time out to share with us today.  I don't want to keep everyone waiting to let's go ahead and start with a little introduction.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
My name is Tiffany Nichole. I am thirty (something) and I live in Virginia. During the week I am a Registered Nurse and full time Mommy. I love GOD.  I love being a church girl and dancing for Jesus is my praise and worship!  I am the owner of MsTiffayNichole.com. My website targets Health, Fitness, Spiritual Growth, Testimonies & Motivational Quotes.  I am also a natural hair ambassador for Alikay Naturals (founded by Rochelle Graham), a blogger for Return of the Curls, and natural hair model.

Awesome....it amazes me how we are able to balance all of our responsibilities and still do things we love.  Way to go!

Well, I want to start by talking about how long you have been natural.
I have been natural for 5 plus years.  I really had no interest in going natural.  It kind of just happened.  Relaxers made my hair paper thin but I thought it was the thing to do.  By the time I started loving my roller set it was time for regular scheduled routine at the salon.  So the day I decided to color my hair was the last day of the creamy crack (lol). A year and a half ago I decided to do something big….I cut my shoulder length hair off.  I continued to make weekly visits to the salon for a wash, blow dry, flat iron, and hair cut/trim to maintain my short hair.   August 2012 was my last scheduled cut/trim and the last flat iron.  I wanted to enjoy summer vacation with my daughter and family without worrying about getting my hair wet.  The rest is history… I rock my fro proudly and it is the best!

And I absolutely love your fro!!!  It sounds like you were a transitioner, am I right?
As my relaxer grew out, I kept up with routine trims.  After bleaching my short hair, I attempted to grow my hair out.  During that phase of my journey I realized my hair had been damaged it was time to snip snip snip!  It was really a nuisance trying to take care of two textures of hair (tight coils vs straight pieces). The two textures were a deal breaker. Chop chop chop...that moment changed my natural hair experience.

So, how did you feel after chopping your hair all off?
Initially I was nervous, scared, a gamete of emotions.  My biggest fear was the unknown (not knowing how to care for my hair in its natural state).  I was concerned about the texture and what products to use, and there was a nagging feeling that rested in the bottom of my stomach of uncertainty and insecurity.  To overcome these challenges I had to reclaim and rediscover me.  I had to peel back the layers of brokenness because what I felt was deeper than my hair.  My journey has been a process of prayer, refocusing, finding and getting reacquainted with and recognizing the girl in the mirror.  My natural hair journey has taught me so much about myself, about people, and perspectives.  Today my confidence speaks volumes and I love love love my tightly coiled kinky textured hair.

Girl...you better preach.  I firmly believe that to most women going natural isn't just about your hair, but it "YOU" as a whole.  Your mind, body, soul, & spirit.  It does help you get reacquainted and rediscover who you are as you embark on your natural hair journey.

It sounds like you were a bit uncertain and dealt with  bit of insecurity (which is common) Tell us how your friends and family reacted to your decision to return back to natural?
For the longest time my family and friends were unaware of my hair status.  Most just assumed I had a relaxer because my roller sets were flawless (thanks to my stylist).  I would say the responses I received were 50/50.  Half loved my afro and because they love me they loved my fro.  Others were iffy and just had a hard time embracing my change.

How would you describe your hair? My hair is fine, curly, and tightly coiled.  If I had to guess my texture I would say I am a 3c/4a.  My favorite styles and absolute favorite are twist outs, coil out, and wash-n-go’s

Do you mind sharing your current hair routine with us?
I try to keep my regimen simple.  I deep condition and shampoo weekly followed by the LOC method.  My styles of choice are twist outs, coil outs, mohawk / frohawk, or afro.  My focus is healthy hair and a healthy scalp.  When my hair is really dry and needs a little extra TLC I  pre poo overnight with coconut oil overnight and sleep in a plastic cap plus bonnet.

Sounds pretty simple enough. What are some of your favorite products?
My absolute favorite natural hair products are made by TreeNaturals. These products changed my natural hair experience. I was introduced to her line of products 12/2013 and I have continued to use them consistently. My hair is healthier, stronger, and growing.

My favorite TreeNaturals products:
Bamboo, Aloe, & Coconut Moisturizing Shampoo – moister, moister, moister
Green Tea & Coconut Conditioner Bar – great for DETANGLING
Rice Flower & Shea Leave-in – I use it as a leave in and styler
Natasha’s Growth Butter – perfect for sealing the ends of my twist, coils, etc...

A months ago I was introduced to AlikayNaturals and I fell in love.
Moisturizing Black Soap Shampoo – moisturizing (alternate with my other fav. #treenaturals)
Lemongrass Leave-in condition - for me works best as a curl refresher and the L when using the LOC method.
Honey and Sage Deep Condition – anything with honey is absolutely amazing
…. I look forward to trying more of these amazing hair products!

No more product junkie!

So, how do you maintain your hair nightly?

My night time routine consists of the LOC method (liquid, oil, cream), re-twist, and I sleep in a satin bonnet. When wearing my two strand twist pined up I remove hair pins at night, I spray my hair with a leave in conditioner or refresher spray, apply a small amount of oil to hair and massage scalp, follow up with a leave-in conditioner and cover with a plastic cap and bonnet.

It was such a pleasure having you on my blog today.  I am glad you were so open to discuss your natural hair journey and regimen with us.

In closing, what would you say is the "Best Thing" about being natural?Everything!  I stepped into my true self as a natural.  I begin to truly embrace who I am, my culture, heritage, and creativity because who I am is Enough.  My natural hair journey has taught me so much about myself and people.  My confidence speaks volumes and I love love love my tightly coily kinky textured hair.  Every day is a new hair experience.  Over the past 8 months I have mastered my favorite styles and they never look the same way twice.

Excellent....Thanks again Tiffany!

Feature Friday "Tynisha" In the Spotlight

Hey Everyone….I am so excited to be bringing the lovely Tynisha to you today.  She is a gorgeous naturalista who has been all over social media with her super chic and creative up-dos.  I’m glad she was able to take a moment to discuss her natural hair with us.
Let’s jump right on into it.
Hey Tynisha….Thanks so much for taking time out to share with use today.  I wanted to start off by you telling everyone a little bit about yourself.

My name is Tynisha….I am 33 years of fabulous! I’m originally from Denver, Colorado and I currently reside in the ATL!
33!!! Girl…did you just say 33 years old???  Wow… you still look like you are in your twenties!!  Keep doing what you are doing lady, because you look nice and youthful. Okay…let me get back to the interview. LOL!
How long have you been natural?
I have been natural in terms of “chemical free” for 8 years but it has only been within the last 2 years that I’ve decided to embrace my own natural hair. Previously, you could always find me rocking the longest silkiest weave you could ever find….LOL!
Did you slowly transition or did you Big Chop?
When I started wearing my natural hair it was literally almost overnight. My husband and I found out we were pregnant in January 2012 and I just took the weave out and let it be during my pregnancy. When we learned we were having a girl that March of 2012, it made my decision to continue clearer.  I already had 2 boys but it was something about having a daughter that made me want to continue this journey. I wanted my daughter to see “me” and see herself in me with no enhancements if that makes sense. It was important to me to show her from the start that “we” are perfect the way we are.
Awesome!!! What better motivation than your own child.  You are setting an excellent example for her.
Once you started wearing you own natural hair out, how did you feel?
Once I started wearing my own hair and embracing me I felt free and unashamed. There were times were I would not go to work if I could not get an appointment to put my weave back in. I will admit, I was scared in the beginning of what others would think, especially in Corporate America. I did not know how to style my hair and I thought that it looked crazy but I kept pushing! LOL
I can definitely relate to that.  I felt similar in my Corporate America setting, but I kept it moving as well.  LOL!!!
How did family and friends react to your decision to go natural?
I was very worried about what my husband would think because he was so used to me either rocking short cuts or weave. He was very supportive which was all that I needed. My friends were also very supportive, but I did have those women who would tell me I needed a perm or I need to comb my hair. That was in the beginning but now that I’ve learned my hair, I’ve inspired others to go natural that I had no idea were paying that much attention. LOL…..That keeps me inspired, just like so many of my favorite naturals inspire me.
That’s good to hear.  You really never know who is watching you.  J
Well, can you describe your hair?
My hair is muli-textured, my edges are very soft and manageable; the middle…that’s another story. LOL  It is very thick and I have some areas that are thin due to tension from my continuous wearing of weaves. It’s coming back though! J
What’s your current hair routine?
I co-wash and deep condition my hair every Sunday during the cold months (or at least I try to) LOL I use Treseme Naturals to co-wash my hair. If I have product build-up, I rinse my hair clean with a mixture of Apple Cider Vinegar and water. I seal in moisture with water, Organic Coconut Oil from Trader Joe’s and Shea Butter. I deep condition with Eden Body Works All Natural Deep Conditioner with Jojoba and Monoi and I almost always wear protective styles like twists or buns.
And might I add those protective styles are the BOMB!!! LOL!!
So, what are your favorite products?
I have so many products…like every natural, I’m a product junkie.  My favorites are Eden Body Works All Natural Deep Conditioner with Jojoba and Monoi. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Trader Joe’s Organic Coconut Oil and I just started using It’s a 10 Leave in Conditioner with Keratin. I also love Cream of Nature 7 in 1 Leave in Conditioner and Cantu products. I also keep raw Shea Butter on deck and I LOVE Garnier Fructise Sleek and Shine Leave in Conditioner. It’s inexpensive and it smells great! Oh yeah, I can’t forget my Jamaican Black Castor Oil…it has worked wonders for my thin areas.
How do you maintain your hair at night?
My night time routine is simple…I spritz my protective style with water and I tie it up. Nothing fancy! LOL
Tynisha, I want to thank you again for taking time out of your day.  You have turned me onto some different products that I may be trying soon and you really let us in.  I appreciate your candidness and your willingness to share with us.  Before I let you go can you tell us what you think the best thing is about being natural?
The best thing for me about being natural is that I’m learning how to care for my hair. I love the versatility and I love that my hair is mine.
Great!! Thanks again, Tynisha. If you want to see more of Tynisha, please check her out at the following social media sites below.

Feature Friday "MrsHairToday" in the Spotlight!

Hey Everyone….I am back today with another Fabulous Feature Friday!!! Today I have the Beautiful Donna, also known as, MrsHairToday on social media sharing her natural hair story, so let’s jump right into it.
Hey Donna, thanks for taking time out to share with us today. Can you start off by letting everyone know a little bit about yourself?
My name is Donna. I am 33 years old. I'm a mother of 3 wonderful children and I've been married to one man for 7 1/2 years. I love vlogging about natural hair and empowering women all over the world to embrace their natural beauty.
Awesome….now let’s get into this beautiful hair of yours.
How long have you been natural? I have been natural for 3 1/2 years.
So, were you a slow transitioner or did you Big Chop? I did the "Big Chop" because I was wearing protective styles and decided to make all of my hair one texture. It was hard trying to maintain permed hair and natural hair. It's doable but once I built up enough confidence to cut off all the chemical remaining in my hair, I was ready to do it with no turning back.
How did you feel after going natural? I felt nervous at first. But soon afterwards, I felt refreshed. I felt like a "new me". I was ready to start experimenting with different products to see what my hair would like and what styles I could teach myself.
How did family and friends react to your decision to go natural?  The reaction I received from my family was positive. They were in shock that I cut my hair but they have supported me all the way. As far as friends, there were mixed reactions. Some people thought it was a fad. They told me that I would eventually go back to getting perms once I see how hard it was to maintain natural hair. Boy was they wrong. Today, they now want to know how they can start their own journey. I love it! Always be Fierce and Confident in your decisions!

That is some great advice right there!!! I’m glad you stuck it through and didn’t give up.
Well, do you mind describing your hair for us? My hair is 3c in the front and 4a in the back. I never got it straight about the numbers but I think I'm pretty close to it. My hair in the back is more course and dry. I have to apply more products to the back of my hair to make sure it stays moisturized. The front of my hair is pretty much soft. No matter what I do to it, it works out every time.
What’s your current hair routine? I can't really say I have a routine but I try to make sure I deep condition at least once a month. I try to wash my hair every other week to keep my naturals oils in. Washing your hair too much will cause you to take out oils in your hair which can lead to breakage. I also give myself a trim every 2 months now, even if it's dusting the ends. As the weather changes to warm weather I will do more co-washing. Lastly, I'm finding out which products work for me and sticking to it. I keep a leave-in in along with a twisting cream to keep moisture in my hair.
What are some of your favorite products?
Some of my favorite products are the following:
Eco Styler Gel (a must), Jane Carter's Nourish and Shine, Entwine Couture's entire line, Herbal Essence Honey I'm Strong, Organix Coconut Milk shampoo and conditioner, Design Essentials Stretching Creme, As I Am Twist Defining Cream and Cowash, Miss Jessie's Curly Meringue, Cantu Shea Leave-in, Beautiful Textures entire line, Creme of Nature entire line, etc... I have so many favs!
You sure do!!! LOL!
How do you maintain your hair at night? I try to apply oil to my hair each night and secure my hair with my satin bonnet.
Sounds easy enough!
I want to thank you again Donna for taking time out to share with us.  I am sure many women have seen your pics floating around on social media, so this will give them a little bit more insight about you and your hair routine.
Before I let you go, can you tell us what the best thing about being natural is? The best thing about being natural is the versatility. I can rock my hair in an Afro, twists, puff, Updo, or wear it straight or curly. There are no limitations when it comes to natural hair. It's just that FAB?
