How To Straighten Natural Hair | The Mane Choice

Hey Everyone,

I don't know about you, but when I straighten my natural hair I can't seem to get it as silky and straight as a hair stylist or blow out specialist would if I was to hand over that $150. LOL!  You guys know I am all about DIY Hairstyles, so when I tried my hand at flat ironing my own natural hair in the past, it just doesn't seem to flow and definitely doesn't have the lasting power to withstand humidity or a straightened naturals most feared nightmare "The Rain"!!!

Well....I hadn't straightened my hair myself in over a year, so I was thinking it was about time and was recently able to collaborate with www.TheManeChoice.com and try out their do it yourself/at home 5 Step Thermal Defense Silkening Collection. I must say that I was honestly impressed with how well my hair straightened with only (1) pass of the flatiron, but I ended up doing (2) and I was excited that my hair didn't start reverting back as soon as I finished.  The collection is full of products that are designed and formulated to help prevent premature reversion of natural hair and helps to maintain the sleek look for longer without achieving damage *if used properly and used with the correct amount of heat was used for your hair*

This is certainly not a hair straightening system as it doesn't promise to elongate your natural hair after use and nor does it permanently straighten natural hair, but it is a collection that will help you achieve maximum results should you chose to flatiron your natural hair.  This collection in conjunction with the Give It To Me Straight Collection and the Green Tea & Carrot Deep Conditioning Mask are a win win combination. The results speak for themselves!!!!

 I USED THE FOLLOWING:

  • Give It To Me Straight Moisturizing Shampoo is infused with Morrocan Argan Oil for incredible shine and frizz control and citric acid to remove build-up and restore pH balance to hair and scalp. This shampoo is safe for all hair types including color-treated hair, it lathers up easily with just a small amount, and it smells really nice and fresh.

  • Green Tea & Carrot Deep Conditioning Mask is packed with nourishing, healthy hair necessities like organic aloe juice, castor oil, sunflower oil, hydrolyzed wheat protein for strength, broccoli seed oil, which is great for frizz-control, coconut oil, green tea extract for protection and carrot seed oil, to treat the scalp, prevent breakage and protect from outside elements. It also has great slip allowing the product to coat the hair and detangle with ease.

  • Give It To Me Straight Leave-In Detangler is a lightweight mist infused with chamomile matricaria and aloe leaf juice for ultimate hydration, wheat amino acids for strength, sage extract to reduce shedding and enhance natural luster, and many other key ingredients that help keep the hair
  • moisturized and easy to detangle.

According to http://www.TheManeChoice.com this is "A complete collection of thermal styling products, especially formulated to help shield your hair from heat appliances so you can enjoy your styles with confidence. Do not let the pretty in pink packaging fool you. This thermal defense silkening collection has a professional grade quality and packs a lot of power. No more than a dime size per product is needed to thermally protect your hair and give it that sleek professional salon finish we all long for."

    The Steps Include The Following:
Step 1 - The Heat Silencer is formulated to strengthen hair, protect hair from heat applications, and repair damage.

Step 2 - Glisten To Me is formulated to protect hair from heat styling, smooth hair for ultimate shine,
temporarily straighten the hair, and repeal humidity.

Step 3 - Strand By Strand is formulated to, straighten & smooth strands, helps silken & glide while blow-drying, and helps reduce frizz.

Step 4 - A Silky Protection is formulated to add a silky brilliant shine, control frizz, mend frayed & frizzy ends, and provide extreme heat protection.

Step 5 - Let's Finish It is formulated to smooth frizz & flyaways, add an instant shine, and Finish your sleek & luscious look.  It also leaves your hair smelling amazing!!!

    Hair Tools Used:
    3-4 Hair Clips
    Denman Brush
    Gold'n'Hot Blow Dryer
    Chase Comb
    Flatiron

    Hairstyle Maintenance:
Wrap the hair up at night with a satin or silk scarf.  You could also add large rollers or flexirods to the hair and sleep with a satin bonnet for heatless curls.

Natural Hair Protective Hairstyle | feat. 15 Melbourne

    Hey Everyone,

It's definitely protective style season, so I wanted to bring you a super easy protective hairstyle that is actually two hairstyles in one.  You can go from a super easy protective up-do hairstyle during the week and then let it down for the weekend for a fun look. If you know how to flat-twist or twist, this will be the perfect hairstyle for you.

This protective hairstyle is brought to you by 15 Melbourne. 15 Melbourne is a New York based company founded by Evelyn.  This product line is all about handmade, organic and natural skincare products that can be used on the skin and the hair. This line is equipped with Cream Castile Soap (French Lavender and Pink Grapefruit scent), Organic Whipped Shea Butter (Lavender, Pink Grapefruit, and Bergamont & Geranium scents), and Organic Shea Lip Butter (Peppermint and Unscented).

For this hairstyle I used 15 Melbourne's Organic Whipped Shea Butter in the Pink Grapefruit scent.  This light weight shea butter mix has a soft scent and literally melts into the hair when applying.  I love the fact that a little bit of the shea butter goes a long way and keeps your hair thoroughly moisturized which is vital during the cooler months when our hair tends to be a bit drier.

This organic whipped shea butter has a dual purpose because it works wonderfully on the hair, but also does a great job of keeping the skin moisturized as well.  I often apply the Bergamot & Geranium shea butter on my heels of my feet at night before bed and this helps to keep them from becoming cracked and dry during this time of year.

I have definitely been loving their products and would definitely recommend them for anyone looking for a great shea butter mix that is ultra hydrating and moisturizing to the skin and hair.

If you aren't into making your own shea butter mix, I would suggest trying this out.  To find more information on 15 Melbourne, make sure you check out their website at www.15Melbourne.com and just as and FYI, they do provide free shipping on order $25 or more and they also include a free sample with every order.

L.O.C. Method vs. L.C.O. Method, Which do you prefer?

The L.O.C method is definitely a common technique that is practiced within the natural hair community.  Many naturalistas routinely practice this laying technique as a way to help retain as much moisture as possible in their hair.
For those new to this term or method, L.O.C is an abbreviation for leave in conditioner, oil, and cream.  The name itself provides easy-to-remember steps on what order the products should be applied to the hair.
The L.O.C. method has become very popular because it really does help maximize moisture retention, by in coupling oil and cream/butter which are both designed to seal and lock in moisture within the hair shaft making it difficult to escape and evaporate into the air.
Although many have achieved true moisture success by using the L.O.C method, many argue that the L.C.O method is the way to go.  This method has the same methodology as the L.O.C. method, but you would apply the leave in conditioner, cream, and then the oil to the hair.  The thought is you would apply the oil last in order to seal in all of the moisture into the hair shaft.  Many think that if you apply the cream/butter over the oil you are not receiving the full moisture benefits of that product because the oil has already sealed up the hair shaft preventing any further moisture to penetrate.
No method is right or wrong, it’s really up to you and how well your hair responds.

To incorporate the L.O.C method or the L.C.O method into your hair regimen or routine, follow the steps below:
    Directions for L.O.C. Method
    1.       Step 1 - Apply a moisturizing water-based leave-in conditioner to cleansed hair
    2.       Step 2 - Apply a thin layer of oil to your hair to help lock in the moisture
    3.       Step 3 - Apply a butter-based, creamy moisturizer to your hair to seal that moisture in
    Directions for L.C.O. Method
             1.    Step 1 - Apply a moisturizing water-based leave-in conditioner to cleansed hair
    2.       Step 2 - Apply a butter-based, creamy moisturizer to your hair to lock in moisture
    3.       Step 3 - Apply a thin layer of oil to your hair to help seal  in the moisture
You can follow up with any styling product as usual once you have completed the above steps.
    Switch It Up
Remember, it is all trial and error and what works for someone may not work well for you.  Feel free to modify and switch it up a bit in order to suite your hair needs.  Test out different products in order to find out the best leave in conditioner, cream/butter, and what oil combination responds best on your hair.
Also, if your have finer hair, suffer from product build up, or your hair doesn’t absorb moisture easily (you have low porosity hair) you may want to limit the amount of product you apply to your hair or opt for lighter oils and creams, so your hair isn’t really greasy or weighted down.
Lastly, make sure you give it some time to work.  Don’t just try it out one time and decide that it’s not for you.  Whenever you change something up you have to give your hair some time to adjust before you can actually make a final determination as to if your hair loves it or not.  I would try it out a least 2 or 3 times before making a final decision.
I hope this was beneficial to you and will help you on your journey to healthy hair.
We want to hear from you. Leave a comment below letting us know what method you prefer to use the L.O.C or the L.C.O.
    Until Next Time,
    Take Care and God Bless!!

    @Followingjas
    Hey Everyone,
One of the hottest and even sexiest trends going on right now are FAUX LOCS. We all know that real locs take years to grow and develop into a back draping, waist touching length, so for those women who don’t have that kind of time to wait or want to test the waters before committing to the real deal a quick fix technique was developed to create these temporary locs we have all been eyeing.

    @Ciara

I must say that way before R&B/Pop Singer Ciara hit Instagram “Straight Flexin’” with her faux locs, many of you beautiful women were slaying this style on a daily!! I certainly won’t be surprised if I see more faux locs hairstyles being rocked  as we move through the rest of the summer.

Feature Friday "Courtney" In the Spotlight

    Hi Guys,

I am so excited about bring you another “Feature Friday”.  This Friday I have the gorgeous Courtney, also known as, “Curls & Couture”.  This gorgeous beauty that has been all over the place on social media has agreed to chit chat and share her natural hair story with us, so without further ado let’s get into it.

Hi Courtney….thanks for taking time out of your schedule to share with us today.  I want to start off by allowing you the chance to tell those who have heard about you, a little bit about yourself.

My name is Courtney Stradford also known as “Courtney Dee” from my Youtube Channel “Curls & Couture”. I’m a self proclaimed fashionista from NY and a diva from birth (haha). I’m Christian, a graduate student and a fitness and health nut.

Awesome!!! So, let’s get right into this fabulous hair of yours.

How long have you been natural?
I’ve been fully natural since January 2013.

Wow!!! I cannot believe you have only been completely natural since the start of 2013.  I think I know the answer to this question, but did you transition or did you Big Chop?

I chose to transition my hair. Funny thing is my decision to go natural was a bit of an accident. I stopped relaxing my hair December 2011 with the idea of going natural but I was still apprehensive. I ended up putting in a weave for my birthday and when I saw how much new growth I had and that I could still wear my hair straight I decided to go for it. I wasn’t ready to cut off all of my length- that is why I chose to transition. The transitioning was also a learning process for me. When my hair was relaxed I didn’t have to do much, I didn’t moisturize it or wrap it; I just threw it up in a high ponytail, shook it down in the morning and got wash and sets religiously. Natural hair isn’t that simple haha!! I had to learn how to take care of my natural hair and all the ins and outs (moisturizing, protective styling, curl patterns and textures, protein treatments, etc). I made some mistakes during my transition, things that I would never recommend to anyone considering transitioning but it helped me learn and embrace my natural hair even more.

How did you feel after going natural?

I had mixed feelings. I was soooo excited that I completed my transition (I couldn’t stand the stringy relaxed ends haha),but I didn’t love my curls or my length- I straightened right away!! But a few weeks later when I washed it and did my first twist out I started liking a lot more. It was a new experience for me.

Okay….so it took you some time to get used to your natural hair, how did family and friends react to your decision to go natural?

My friends were all for it, I think they were more excited than I was but my family not so much. They did not understand why I wanted to go natural, they didn’t think I would actually do it nor did they think I would like it. Crazy people!! Both the positive and negative responses pushed me even more- it actually pushed me to create my YouTube channel. When I finally cut off all of my relaxed ends my family fell in LOVE! My mom loved my hair so much that she is transitioning now!!

Girl yes….that’s how you do it.  Allow other responses and feedback fuel you to keep going instead of making you second guess yourself or cause you to give up.  I am so glad you struck it through.

You’ve been natural for over a year now, how would you describe your hair?

Right now my hair is colored blonde. I had it professionally dyed, with highlights and lowlights last June. It is EXTREMELY thick and dense but reasonably manageable. Reasonable to me at least, but I always get a good arm work out on wash day. I have about 3 different textures in my hair. My curls in the front are a 3c, the middle and sides are like a 4a and the back is a 4b. I used to be annoyed that it wasn’t consistent but it gives my hair a nice shape. My hair is also cut in layers.

    What’s your current hair routine?
I consider myself the Queen of mixing products. I am always mixing something to enhance the benefits of that product to meet the needs of my hair.

My routine starts on wash day (Saturday or Sunday)

I pre-poo for 30 minutes with a mix of warm olive oil, coconut oil and avocado oil in 4 lightly detangled sections. All of my parting and a majority of my detangling is done with my fingers to avoid pulling and breakage.

Once I rinse the pre-poo, I cleanse with whatever conditioner I am trying at the time and finger detangle each section while the conditioner is it in and the rinse.

I apply my deep conditioner and again finger detangle and allow that to sit for 30min under a heating cap and then rinse with cool water.

Once all of the DC is out, I rinse again with cold aloe vera juice from the refrigerator. This closes the cuticle, locking in the moisture. Aloe vera juice is also moisturizing.

I apply my leave in conditioner while I am in the shower then I style.

I keep my hair divided in 4 sections always. Once I have applied my styling product or butter, I detangle once with my fingers and part into 4-5 smaller sections within the big section. I detangle the smaller sections with a Denman brush.

    Then twist.

I seal two ways. Sometimes immediately after I rinse with aloe vera juice and I rinse quickly so my hair isn’t too oily, this is typically done when I am doing a wash and go. If I am styling I will seal while I am twisting my hair. I normally do the latter.

In the morning I take down my twists with coconut oil. I moisturize every other day in the morning with coconut oil and whatever butter I am using at the time. (I have a lot of samples from events so I am trying different butters to see which I like.)

Such great detail…you know us women love DETAILS!!! Thank you!!  What are your Holy Grail products?

Shescentit Deshani Scalp Elixir is my favorite thing to moisturize my scalp and I love it for my protective hairstyles. Coconut and Olive oil are my go-to oils for pre-pooing, sealing and moisturizing. Mixed Chicks leave in conditioner and Deep conditioner are absolutely fantastic in my hair. The leave in conditioner gives my hair amazing definition for a wash and go and both are extremely moisturizing. I mix Olive oil and Avocado oil in my DC. I also use Shea Moisture’s Anti-Breakage Masque and Deep Treatment Masque depending on the needs of my hair. I will usually mix the Shea Moisture and Mix Chicks DC. I cannot twist my hair without Shea Moisture’s Curl Enhancing Smoothie (great for moisture) and Olive Oil Ecostyler gel. I also really like Camille Rose Natural’s Curl Maker for styling. I have not found a co wash that I love but I am currently using Tresemme Naturals Condition and looking forward to trying Trader Joe’s Nourishing Spa. Can’t live without Lily of the Desert aloe vera juice, Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar and Aztec Secrets Bentonite Clay

How do you maintain your hair at night?
Very simply- once I have twisted my hair for the week I pineapple it with a satin scarf. This doesn’t leave any dents in my hair and pretty much maintains the curls for the week. I love big frizzy hair so by the end of the week it’s the perfect size for me. I apply a scalp elixir at night and either an oil or butter to the length of my hair.

Thanks again Courtney, for taking time out to share with us.  I learned so much about you and your hair today.  Before I let you go, can you please tell us what the best thing is about being natural?

The best thing about being natural is the versatility and the women that I have met. I love that I can go from curly to straight, wear braids, twist, weaves and wigs. I also love embracing my natural self. I believe your hair is your crown and you should wear it as such. You should take care of it, invest in it and wear it proudly. It’s a talking point amongst men and women and because of my natural hair I’ve met some amazing, powerful women who have given me advice and compliments and vice versa. I must meet a woman almost every day who is either considering going natural, is already natural and just loves hair- I live for experiences where I can meet and interact with new people.
